Embark on an original tour of the Musée Sandelin's collections. On this tour of the collections, you'll discover a wide range of eras, styles and materials around the theme of water. The town of Saint-Omer is inextricably linked with its famous river, the Aa, and the medieval weapons on display at the museum were discovered during excavations on the banks of this waterway. Water was of vital importance, both for cultivation and for navigation, as can be seen from the motifs on the floor tiles from Notre-Dame Cathedral. This element is also found on the famous foot of the cross at Saint-Bertin, where the story of Moses is evoked. But water also evokes the idea of setting off on great voyages by boat, depicted in seascapes painted in the 17th and 18th centuries. Waterways also inspired 19th-century artists such as Belly (the Nile) and Hokusai (the Sumida).
