On 1 April 1944, at 10.44pm, a group of Resistance fighters committed sabotage on the Ascq railway line, with the aim of slowing down the supply of German weapons and goods to Normandy.
An explosion sounded and the train came to a halt. The Resistance fighters were unaware of this, but the train was in fact occupied by 400 SS soldiers, who massacred 86 innocent people in retaliation.
