Almost two million French soldiers were captured during the French campaign
by the Wehrmacht. A symbol of the strange defeat, many of them spent five years in Germany in
Germany in Oflags and Stalags until the defeat of the Third Reich. In an astonishing
reversal, the jailers of '40 became the losers of '45: almost a million Germans found themselves
Germans found themselves in French hands, some of them until 1948. These "Hitler's soldiers" embodied Germany's total defeat. What do these two experiences of captivity have in common? How did the Nazi regime and Republican France treat the defeated? What memories did these stories nourish? The conference will attempt to answer these questions.
