250 years ago, on 4 July 1776 to be precise, 56 delegates from Congress gathered in Philadelphia to officially sign the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.
The Declaration of Independence was drafted in just a few days by Thomas Jefferson, assisted mainly by Benjamin Franklin and John Adams. Among the 56 signatories of the Declaration of Independence was Charles Carroll. He was born in 1737 in Annapolis, the son of a Maryland planter, and spent part of his schooling at the Jesuit College in Saint-Omer.
