250 years ago, on 4 July 1776 to be precise, 56 delegates from Congress gathered in Philadelphia to officially sign the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.
The Declaration of Independence was drafted in just a few days by Thomas Jefferson, assisted mainly by Benjamin Franklin and John Adams. Among the 56 signatories of the Declaration of Independence was Charles Carroll. He was born in Annapolis in 1737, the son of a Maryland planter, and studied at the Jesuit College in Saint-Omer.
