Description
Lecture by Philippe Roger: 1945, a year of renewal for Nord and Pas-de-Calais
"Although the liberation of the region in 1945 was rapid, it was also incomplete. The Dunkirk pocket held out until Germany surrendered. The after-effects of the war, which lasted until the spring, were of course both multiple and omnipresent.
In 1945, political life was reorganised: the dominant political forces of the inter-war period, the socialists and the conservative right, appeared to be in rather poor shape. The Communists and Christian Democrats, on the other hand, embodied the revival.
The spring municipal elections seemed to confirm this new direction.
Women took part for the first time. The revival of the regional economy was more than laborious. In fact, it was not until 1948, or even 1949, that the situation really improved, in a general context that was markedly different from the one imagined by the northerners in 1945.
During a 30-minute themed tour, explore one aspect of the temporary exhibition "Libérer, Reconstruire, Espérer. The challenges of 1945 in Nord-Pas-de-Calais", looking at the damage done and the reconstruction of the region, before attending the lecture.
