Built between 1716 and 1721, the town hall was designed by Héroguel, the architect who served King Louis XIV in Arras. Classified as a historic monument in 1947 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, this classical-style belfry symbolises the return of Aire-sur-la-Lys to the bosom of the Kingdom of France after the Dutch occupation of 1710. Ten pilasters crown a balustrade and pediment charged with symbols of strength and justice. The town's coat of arms has replaced the royal coat of arms, but a head of Apollo still bears the imprint of the Sun King.
The belfry, a landmark in the town since the 12th century, has stood the test of time, fire and attack... But that's all it took to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site! The climb up the 236 steps will be amply rewarded by the exceptional view from the watchman's lodge.
Organised by the Aire-sur-la-Lys Tourist Information Centre, in partnership with the Aire Animation Patrimoine Association. Meeting point (unless otherwise stated) at the Tourist Information Centre, Le Bailliage, Grand' Place, Aire-sur-la-Lys.
