DRAWINGS AND SCULPTURES OF MASKS :
AN ARTISTIC IMMERSION IN THE WORLD OF OLIVIER D'HULST
From 2 to 27 June, a new exhibition will be on show at the municipal multimedia library. As soon as you enter, 21 pastel and Indian ink drawings and 14 ceramic and terracotta sculptures and masks will be on display. These works, grouped together under the title "De regards en murmures", are the fruit of the work of Olivier d'Hulst, a multi-disciplinary artist. His common thread is the human being. He questions man's place in society, and draws inspiration from this in his drawings and sculptures.
For some years now, he has been working on the theme of the mask. Initially, the artist was particularly interested in the beauty of primitive art. In these civilisations, masks were used for protection and as part of rituals. Little by little, Olivier D'Hulst transposed the idea of the mask to his contemporaries.
Starting from the observation that in our society it is increasingly difficult, not to say impossible, to be oneself, he believes that we wear not one mask but many masks on a daily basis, that we change them according to our needs and the situations in which we find ourselves. His favourite material for sculpture is clay, a material so rich that he can extract emotions from it, explore techniques, experiment with new methods and new patinas.
By bringing his creations to life, the artist gives us his own interpretation of the world. As visitors explore the exhibition, they will come face to face with the characters he has sculpted or drawn. They are beings who look at us with a gaze that is often benevolent but full of wonder.
This art enthusiast also has a number of collections of poetry to his credit. The latest is entitled "L'enfant de papier". On Saturday 13 June from 3pm to 5pm, the author will be reading extracts from his book aloud, followed by a discussion with the audience. He will also be available for a book signing.
Following a sculpture modelling workshop organised by the artist for children aged 6 to 10, the creations will be returned to the budding sculptors at the vernissage and installed at the heart of the exhibition.
