The Evangelical Singing School of Detmold (Evangelische Singschule Detmold) is a choral programme organised by age group, run by the Evangelical Lutheran parishes of Detmold and Hiddesen: from nursery school age right through to adulthood, young singers can receive progressive vocal training. The singing school operates across parishes and brings together several children’s and youth choirs.
The youth choirs MYC and VoiceKamp specialise in a cappella arrangements of pop, jazz and gospel styles. They perform regularly at concerts and festivals in the region and take part in both religious and secular events. Their work is characterised by great stylistic diversity, a quest for sonic precision and a catchy groove. Whilst MYC appeals above all through its focus on gospel and spirituals, VoiceKamp captivates with its colourful jazz harmonies and varied beatboxing. The youth choirs’ tours have already taken them, in various formations, to Hasselt (Belgium), Barcelona (Spain), Verona (Italy) and, in 2022, to Saint-Omer.
Max Jenkins is an organist, choir director and music teacher. He studied music and German for teaching, passed the A-level examination in church music and is currently preparing a PhD in music education at the Detmold University of Music. Jenkins is the founder and director of the Protestant Singing School in Detmold. As a soloist, chamber musician and choir director, he performs both regionally and internationally. A winner of several prizes, he has been recognised at the 6th Neuss Voice and Organ Competition, the 16th Weimar School Piano Performance Competition and the HARMONIE Lindenholzhausen National Choir Competition (2024).
